Mika Cox

MS, AMFT
she/her

Mika’s approach to therapy involves a humanistic, integrative style that utilizes her clients’ strengths and determination for wanting to improve their overall well-being. Taking the first step and deciding to begin therapy can be difficult and scary, but Mika believes it demonstrates courage and resiliency. With her client’s strengths being the foundation of their therapeutic work, Mika aims to create a collaborative, calming, unique, and creative atmosphere. Mika believes therapy is the client’s personal space to develop new skills, persevere through obstacles, and heal their internal wounds.

Mika uses a multicultural lens during therapy and aims to help clients achieve the goals they bring with them. She also utilizes a mixture of theories and models to tailor to her clients’ needs, as she believes there is no “one way” or “right way” to achieve growth. This includes but is not limited to: play therapy, DBT, emotion focused therapy, grief work, mindfulness practices, intergenerational theory, and many others. Mika specializes in working with children ages 5 – 12, adolescents, families, and individuals of all ages.

Mika has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Iowa and a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northwestern University. Mika has a background in social services which involved working with chronically mentally ill adults as well as foster care youth. She also was a master’s fellow for the Minority Fellowship Program, where their focus is to reduce health disparities and improve behavioral health care outcomes for racial and ethnic populations. One fun fact about Mika is she was a student-athlete during her time at the University of Iowa, where she ran track & field.
